Terry G arrived on the scene when we were doing Do Not Adjust Your Set. Here was this American guy, and there was this strange coat he wore. I can’t even remember what it was like now… I just remember him coming along and being very full of ideas and not quite following what he was saying - and being slightly alarmed by his enthusiasm and thinking, ‘We’re trying to get everything absolutely right, we’re trying to control everything and here’s somebody else tearing it off into a different direction.’
- Terry Jones
He was a wacky American and the last thing we needed was a wacky America. I think he was just someone to meet, and see how you got on. I don’t think he’d done anything at that time. We were all just meeting up and there he was in his great big, long coat. A huge long coat. An amazing coat.

Gilliam appeared either under a lunch or a bar circumstance, and he had this fantastic coat, this Afghan coat. It was love at first sight. I fell in love with the coat immediately and I liked him. I took to him instantly, and for some reason I supported him wanting to join us, because we hadn’t let anybody else be in our gang.

Terry Jones, who of course is Welsh. It’s very difficult to know what else to say -  but don’t get into an argument with Terry unless you sort of have a free week, basically. - John Cleese

“The great joy of the group was that we made each other laugh immoderately. We don’t really laugh with anyone else the way we laugh together.” - John Cleese

I think Python must be of its time. We weren’t lampooning, we weren’t actually tying it to people of the moment or events of the moment, so it was hopefully kind of zoning in on human nature more, but it was still defined by the society that we found ourselves in and rebelled against.
